Did you know that the skin is the largest organ of the body weighing between seven and nine pounds and covering an area of about 20 square feet? The skin not only helps regulate the body’s temperature, secrete wastes, and send tactile massages to the brain; but most importantly, skin allows for the sensation of being touched!
In a healthy person, ages 15 to 25 years, the cells of the skin renew themselves every 20 days. During the 30s, the cell-renewal rate slows to about every 28 days. In later years, the cell-renewal rate is even slower. As the natural exfoliation process slows, skin becomes less active, accumulating more and more dead cells on its surface.
